Okay, so I figured it out.

Open AB, click on Menu, Sort-By, then select "file as" - this way you can view the contacts as they are filed - which for me is First Name, Surname

When searching through my contacts, I noticed that it defaults to searching for surname followed by first name.

Is there any way of changing this default to first name first, then surname? If not, ...
